Project HOME

Contributions

This is a relatively recent project which is under a year old. However, we have already made several contributions.

  • We developed a formal definition of an ontology that is rich enough to capture most existing ontology definitions.
  • We developed the concept of an ontology extended relation. Intuitively, OERs extending the relational model of data by associating an ontology with a relation.
  • We developed an extension of the relational algebra to handle ontology extended relations. Using this algebra, users can pose queries to OERs and have a reasonable assurance that semantically correct answers will be returned.
  • We have developed algorithms to automatically build ontologies (or infer ontologies) from legacy relational and XML data sources.
  • We are developing an extension of the OER algebra to apply to XML data sources and to video data sources.
  • We are building a system called HOME that implements these concepts.
