Dr. Jan Plane, Director of the Maryland Center for Women in Computing, Computer Science Department Senior Lecturer, and Assistant Director of the Advanced Cybersecurity Experiences for Students (ACES) Honors Program, served as a panelist for the Empowering Women in IT Event on December 12th, 2013. The event was hosted by Excella Consulting in collaboration with Women in Technology (WIT) and included a screening of the She++ film. “Dr. Plane's participation on the Empowering Women in IT panel was invaluable given her depth of knowledge and first-hand experience with educational issues of women in technology both nationally and internationally,” says Phyllis Kolmus, president of the non-profit Women in Technology organization. Dr. Plane has been an instructor and advisor in the Computer Science Department for the past 25 years. She is committed to increasing the participation of young women and underrepresented minorities in computer science. “I believe that events such as Empowering Women in IT are very valuable for supporting the professional community of female computer scientists and answering difficult questions about the lack of women in computing” says Dr. Plane, “I am honored to have been chosen to serve on the Empowering Women in IT panel.”
