You are absolutely right - don't know what I was thinking. I'll blame jet
lag and searing 42C temperatures for a partial brain meltdown.
I was quite happy to suggest that a volatile could be used to protect access
to w but failed to recognise that the sync block was protecting access to it
in exactly the same way. Nothing wrong there at all.
