Data ServerThe Data Server is the server application that stores the data sets for a particular data site. As Figure 5 depicts, this server can be a full-fledged database server, a Web server, a custom-built data server, or even a file server providing access to flat files. In our current MOCHA prototype implementation, we provide support for object-relational database servers such as Informix, Oracle8i and PostgreSQL, XML file repositories and a custom-built server for the HPSS storage system. An important feature of MOCHA is its ability to work on top of the existing server infrastructure for a particular enterprise. To use MOCHA, there is no need to replace existing servers, or to perform a dangerous operation of re-ingesting the data sets in order to store them in a "convenient" format. Instead, MOCHA uses whatever data serves are available, and accesses the data sets in their existing storage formats.
