• Goal: integrated, end-end transport of carry voice, video, data

  • meeting timing/QoS requirements of voice, video (versus Internet best-effort model)
  • “next generation” telephony: technical roots in telephone world
  • packet-switching (fixed length packets, called “cells”) using virtual circuits
