Information for Prospective TAs
Here are some things to know if you're potentially interested in
being a TA for one of my courses:
- I am currently unable to offer positions to Masters students,
especially those outside of the CS Department. I have no control
over this, so please don't ask.
- A half-time TA position is 10hrs/week, and a full-time position
is 20hrs/week. You need to be prepared to work that much every
week, though often you will only need to work half to
three-quarters of that amount.
- My courses generally involve a lot of manual grading, and
require fast turn-around so that students can resubmit their
work when necessary. That means a target of 72 hours in most
cases, but no more than 1 week, which should be rare. Assignment
submissions arrive throughout the semester, so you must be
prepared to grade on that timescale for the entire semester.
- If you are a PhD student, you must verify with your
research advisor that this is acceptable to them, and they will
respect your time commitment to the course. My TA allocations
are determined by student enrollment, and I need all of my TAs
to actually work their required hours. This is paying your
tuition remission and stipend, and is a real job, not a
sinecure. In particular, you cannot disappear for a full week
due to a paper deadline. Have your advisor contact me if they
have concerns about this.
