Graph Visualization

Summary

As part of my general interest in understanding large, complex systems, I have been drawn to information visualization. I'm particularly interested in visualizing large networks. The main project I've worked on is visualizing ontologies on the semantic web.

Publications

Forthcoming chapter in Visualizing the Semantic Web, 2nd Ed with Paul Mutton.

Mutton, Paul and Jennifer Golbeck, Visualizing Semantic Metadata, Proceedings of Information Visualization 2003, London England, July 16-19, 2003.

Conferences

I was on the workshop committe for VIKE '03 (Visualizing Information in Knowledge Engineering) held at K-CAP 2003 (2nd International Conference on Knowledge Capture). This conference was held concurrently with the 2nd International Semantic Web Conference in Florida this October.

Examples

This is a graph of the three letter currency codes as defined by ISO 4217. The ontology is available at http://www.daml.ecs.soton.ac.uk/ont/currency.daml, or here in dumpont.

This graph is a great illustration of the m-limited force model at work.

This is a visualization of an ontology describing the space shuttle system and its parts. The ontology is available at http://orlando.drc.com/semanticweb/owl/ontology/spaceshuttle/system or via dumpont here. The small independent subgraph is imported ontology data, while the large subgraph shows connection between the parts. It is clear to see the hierarchical structure of the ontology from this visualization.
