Gihan Chanaka Jayatilaka : Blog : Coworking in Washington DC

If you want to work from a spot in DC, these are my suggestions. I have tried working from these places. The experiences have always been good unless specified otherwise. I try to include the spots that does not cost anything. Thanks goes to Alyssa for introduing me to the idea of working from cafes/libraries and to most of these places. I was very pessimistic about this sort of working for a while. However, this approach gave a much needed change of environment for me to stay productive. [TODO: Rephrase this. Why do I sound very dumb?]

  1. Library of Congress - main reading room

    Look it up!

  2. Doubles

Indoor and outdoor seating. There is a table tennis board on the second floor. Outdoor seating space is huge (has fans. No AC). Indoor space has wifi and charging. Outdoor wifi works. Kinda noisy. The food options at this place are very limited. Good to work from if all you need is coffee.

  3. Blue bottle coffee near Georgetown waterfront

Indoor and outdoor seating. Wifi works for indoors but not that great for outdoors. Charging slots in both indoors and outdoords.

  4. A Baked Joint

There is no wifi! Ideal if you just want to read a book without getting distracted by the internet.

  5. The spot mini, College Park

Closest to UMD (not counting Vigilante, Board and Brew -- which are full of UMD studetns. Not the best choice of places if you are looking for a change of environment fom UMD buildings). Good wifi for indoor space.

  6. Folger Shakespeare Library - main reading room

The reading room is open from 9:30am to 4:30pm. There is free wifi, restrooms, welless room, bag locker room, water fountains, and a cafe. The reading room is awesome -- height adjustable sitting/standing desks! This is my top choice as of today. A reader signup is required. Do it online and get the card on your first visit from the front desk.
