Bonnie Dorr named Professor Emerita, and Dianne O'Leary named Distinguished University Professor Emerita

The Department is pleased to announce that the university has named two faculty members, Dr. Bonnie Dorr and Dr. Dianne O'Leary, as Professors Emeritae of the university.

Dr. Bonnie Dorr is now Professor Emerita in both computer science and the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies. Dr. Dorr came to the university in 1990, and her research includes many areas of broad-scale multilingual processing, including machine translation, summarization and cross-language retrieval. She is also associate director of the Institute for Human Machine Cognition, which is a non-profit research institution. Dr. Dorr also held a joint appointment in Linguistics.

While at Maryland, Dr. Dorr co-founded the Computational Linguistics and Information Processing Laboratory in UMIACS and served as co-director for 15 years.  She has also served as a principal scientist at Johns Hopkins University Human Language Technology Center of Excellence.

Dorr is a Sloan Fellow, an NSF Presidential Faculty Fellow, a Fellow of the International Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, and a former president of the Association for Computational Linguistics. She was also a former Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs, Research and Graduate Education for CMNS.

Dr. Dorr holds a bachelor's degree in computer science from Boston University and an S.M. and Ph.D. in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Dianne O’Leary, now Professor Emerita at the University of Maryland Department of Computer Science and UMIACS, has also been named as a Distinguished Professor Emerita by the University of Maryland.  O’Leary joined the University in 1978. Her research has focused on computational linear algebra and optimization. The applications of her research include solution of ill-posed problems, image deblurring, information retrieval and quantum computing.  O’Leary also held an appointment in the University Applied Mathematics and Statistics and Scientific Computing Program.

During the span of her career, Dr. O’Leary authored 2 books, over 100 research publications on numerical analysis and computational science and 30 publications on education and mentoring.

In addition, Dr. O’Leary is a member of the Association of Women in Mathematics and a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery.

Dr. Jack Minker, former Department Chair and Professor Emeritus at the university believed that Dr. O’Leary was a true asset to the department when he was Chair of the faculty who hired her. “Diane is among the best faculty members our CS Department has ever hired,” Minker said. “Any assignment she was asked to undertake was performed in an outstanding manner.”

Dr. O’Leary earned her B.S. in mathematics and a minor in physics from Purdue University and her Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University.
