Ph.D. Alumnus Paulo Shakarian ('11) and CS Undergrad Andrew Ruef are co-authors of a new book, Introduction to Cyber-Warfare: A Multidisciplinary Approach. Shakarian is a Major in the U.S. Army and an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point. He was advised by V.S. Subrahmanian. Ruef expects to complete his B.S. in 2014. FireEye is the latest member to join the university's Corporate Partners in Computing Program, which puts companies like Appian, Booz Allen Hamilton, Carr Astronautics, Google and Yahoo in touch with UMD faculty and students to address challenges in cybersecurity, big data, electronic health records management, artificial intelligence, visual analytics, parallel computing and more. Alumnus Hazem El-Alfy recently joined Osaka University, Japan as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Intelligent Media, working on behavior understanding based on gait. Previously, El-Alfy was Assistant Professor at the University of Alexandria, Egypt. He received his Ph.D. in 2009 and was advised by Larry Davis. His research interests are focused in computer vision with applications in video surveillance and camera management  read more
The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) has announced that Professors Bonnie Dorr and Lise Getoor are among this year's elected AAAI Fellows. Dorr was recognized for her "significant contributions to natural language understanding and representation, and development of the widely recognized methods for interlingual machine translation". Getoor was recognized for her "her significant contributions to methods which combine probabilistic and logical representations in machine learning, knowledge discovery, graph mining, network analysis, and database systems". Hanan Samet and Ben Shneiderman have been selected as Distinguished University Professors. The official title, the highest academic honor that the University confers upon a faculty member, is reserved for a small number of exceptionally distinguished scholars. Samet was recognized for "his stellar accomplishments in the field of Spatial Indexing". Shneiderman was selected "to acknowledge his internationally recognized work in the field of Human-Computer Interaction". Professor Emeritus Pete Stewart is also a Distinguished University Professor, selected in 2006.  read more
The University of Maryland (UMD) today announced Booz Allen Hamilton as a new member of the Corporate Partners in Computing Program. Hosted by the Department of Computer Science and University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS), this partnership will foster collaboration between Booz Allen and the key focal points in computing at UMD. Alumnus Suman Banerjee, Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin, has received ACM SIGmobile's "Rockstar" award. The award recognizes early career achievements in the field of mobile computing. He will accept the award and deliver a talk at MobiCom 2013 this Fall. Banerjee received his Ph.D. in 2003 and was advised by Ashok Agrawala and Bobby Bhattacharjee.
