Dr. Evan Golub has been promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer. In addition to teaching undergraduate courses, Dr. Golub has been an Assistant Director at HCIL. He has also been involved in student advising and mentoring, conducting research projects, and working on various student projects and teams. In addition, Dr. Golub has been involved in the High School Programming Contest as well as summer programs on campus. read more
Associate Professor Lise Getoor is an invited speaker at the graduation ceremony for the School of Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University today, May 10. She is also an invited speaker at the Santa Fe Institute workshop on Structure, Statistical Inference, and Dynamics in Networks: From Graphs to Rich Data. read more
Professor V.S. Subrahmanian was the keynote speaker at the 2013 Sentiment Analysis Symposium in New York City on May 8. He spoke on "Sentiments, Signals, and Action: Some Stories". read more
CS undergrad student Elissa Redmiles was selected as an Honorable Mention in the Computing Research Association's Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award for 2013. The June 2013 issue of Computing Research News will include an article on the awards. An announcement of the awards will be posted on CRA's website ( www.cra.org ) later this week. read more
Graduate student Udayan Khurana received the Best Poster Runner-up Award at the 29th International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE), held in Brisbane, Australia in April 2013. The poster was for the research paper "Efficient Snapshot Retrieval over Historical Graph Data"(co-authored with Assoc. Prof. Amol Deshpande) and can be seen outside AVW 3220. read more
Prof. Emeritus Vic Basili, an Adjunct Professor at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, gave two talks and two workshops this week at the University on the GQM+Strategies Approach and the Process Risk Indicator Methodology. These workshops dealt with the alignment and measurement of business goals and strategies and the early identification of the risk of not achieving emergent software properties such as safety and reliability, respectively. read more
Associate Professor Atif Memon is giving an invited talk at Apple Headquarters in Palo Alto, CA on May 21, 2013. His audience includes teams that write test automation tools for iOS and execute 10 million tests a month on 600 devices. read more
A group of researchers at the Fraunhofer Center for Experimental Software Engineering has received a NASA Group Achievement Award for their work on software assurance and technology transfer. This is part of NASA's Software Assurance Research Program (SARP). Members who shared in this award are Profs. Emeritus Victor R. One of Dr. Michelle Hugue's students (rising senior Graham Welch) and one of Mr. Fawzi Emad's students (rising senior Luke Valenta) have been chosen as 2013-2014 Philip Merrill Presidential Scholars. Lecturers Hugue and Emad have been named by Welch and Valenta as the faculty mentors who have had the most impact on their academic achievements. This highly selective program recognizes academic excellence in UMD students and the important role that faculty members have as teachers and mentors. Mentors and scholars will be honored at a celebration luncheon on Nov. 5, 2013. read more
