UMD Honors Richa Mathur with MVP Impact Award
The University of Maryland recently honored Richa Mathur, assistant director of executive and faculty affairs in the Department of Computer Science, with the prestigious MVP Impact Award. This accolade recognizes her dedication to fostering a collaborative and inclusive community, her significant contributions to the department and her commitment to advancing the university's core values.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award,” Mathur said. “I am grateful for the opportunities to contribute to such a vibrant and inclusive community. This recognition inspires me to continue striving for excellence and to support the university’s mission in every possible way.”
The MVP Impact Award is part of UMD's annual recognition program, which celebrates staff members who embody a ‘Fearlessly Forward’ attitude. Mathur’s exceptional achievements earned her this recognition, which includes a $1,000 monetary prize. She was selected from over 230 nominations this year.
Mathur’s work as assistant director of executive and faculty affairs has supported the department’s leadership and faculty. Her duties include managing the promotion and tenure process, coordinating faculty searches and overseeing departmental communications, all of which contribute to the department's overall success.
“The dedication and creativity of our staff drive the Department of Computer Science forward,” said Department Chair Matthias Zwicker, who holds the Elizabeth Iribe Chair for Innovation and the Phillip H. and Catherine C. Horvitz Professorship. “Richa Mathur’s exceptional work has profoundly impacted our community, fostering an environment where collaboration thrives. Receiving the MVP Impact Award is a well-earned recognition of her efforts, and we are truly grateful for her commitment to our department's success.”
Mathur’s efforts extend beyond her core responsibilities. She has been involved in organizing key departmental events, creating a dynamic and engaging community for faculty, staff and students. Her dedication to building an inclusive and vibrant culture has made a lasting positive impact on the department and the university.
“I have had the pleasure of working with Richa as an APT chair,” said Distinguished University Professor of Computer Science Dinesh Manocha, who holds the Paul Chrisman Iribe Professorship. “Her leadership, proactive approach and dedication to fostering collaboration have greatly benefited our department. Her professionalism and organizational skills set a high standard, and the MVP Impact Award is a fitting acknowledgment of her efforts.”
Professor of Computer Science Ashok Agrawala echoed these sentiments, praising Mathur’s service.
"I've worked and collaborated with Richa in her role within the department, and she has been remarkable," Agrawala said. "Her commitment to excellence, attention to detail and ability to inspire collaboration have rightfully earned her this recognition."
Reflecting on her seven-year journey at UMD, Mathur expressed gratitude for the opportunities she has had to grow and make an impact.
“Starting as a contingent I employee and growing into my current role has been a challenging yet rewarding experience,” she said. “I've had the privilege of working alongside inspiring colleagues and contributing to forward-thinking initiatives. This award feels like a culmination of those efforts, and I’m excited to continue finding new ways to make a positive impact.”
Mathur will be formally recognized at a ceremony in February 2025.
