Aravind Srinivasan named SIAM Fellow
Professor Aravind Srinivasan was recently named a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) for 2020. SIAM is an international society which aims to promote research that will lead to effective new mathematical and computational methods and techniques for science, engineering, industry, and society.
SIAM specifically recognized Srinivasan for his “contributions to randomized algorithms and probabilistic methods with applications to network and computational science”. Srinivasan’s research has been at the intersection of randomized algorithms, AI, discrete optimization, and machine learning -- both for foundational questions, as well as for applications including public health, fair allocations, digital marketing, resource allocation, networking, and E-commerce.
Srinivasan also recently received the NSF Expeditions Grant in Computational Epidemiology wherein his study aims at tackling COVID-19 and similar such (future) epidemics and pandemics by predicting and minimizing their spread through improved computational methods.
He plans to continue his research on the above, as well as on improved organ-exchange mechanisms, matching problems arising in digital marketing, rideshare, and crowdsourcing, improved clustering algorithms, fairness in AI, algorithms in (cancer) genomics, and fundamental considerations at the intersection of randomness and algorithms.
Srinivasan is one of 28 SIAM members selected as a Fellow for 2020.
Srinivasan received his undergraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, and his doctorate from Cornell University, both in computer science.
In addition to this accolade, Srinivasan is also a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), and a Fellow of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS).
