A tool for observing detailed performance characteristics of an end-to-end connection on the Internet

• Use standard protocol implementations

  • Do not use of any special features

• Minimize the overhead

  • Send 32 Byte UDP packets
  • Smallest size packets used at link level (e.g. 64 Bytes for Ethernet)

• Monitor for a long time with fine time resolution

  • Send packets about 40 ms apart
  • Send 45,000 packets (30 minutes)

• Overhead at the rate of probe packets at 40 ms

  • 1600 Bytes per second
  • 25 packets/second
