Observations

• The network behavior changes with time and load

  • Time for a primitive action is very small
    • Router processes a packet in < 1 ms
  • Behavior can change rapidly

• Transient behavior plays a significant role

• To a user, transport level behavior is most important

• Ping based measurements do not give enough details, and

  • Ping packets (ICMP) are treated differently by the switches
