SHOE Enabled Pages

Parallel Understanding Systems Group
Department of Computer Science
University of Maryland at College Park

In order to demonstrate the general nature of SHOE and its applicability to very different problems, we have annotated pages in a variety of domains. Below we discuss the Computer Science, TSE, and Beer domains.

Computer Science Domain

The pages described in this section were annotated with respect to the cs-dept-ontology, v.1.0.

SHOE Pages in the PLUS Group

We have annotated a number of pages related to the PLUS group. A partial list of these pages follows:

The SHOE annotations of these pages can be examined by viewing the page source in your web browser or by opening them in the Knowledge Annotator.

SHOE Summaries of Other Computer Science Websites

In order to test SHOE with large amounts of data, we have created annotations for pages which we do not control. These annotations appear on pages owned by the PLUS group, but describe pages elsewhere on the Web. Using a similar technique, individuals or organizations can index sites on the Web that do not have SHOE. Note, that unless web agents trust the source of these annotations, they should be skeptical. It would be very easy for someone to falsely annotate a page.

We have annotated the pages of 15 top-ranked Computer Science departments in the US. These annotations can be found on the following pages:

The extent of the annotations vary from page to page. Most contain basic information about the department and its university, as well as classifications, names, and membership relations for the faculty. Some contain names and classification for courses, students and/or research groups.

Publication information from ResearchIndex.com

ResearchIndex.com is a search engine for computer science publications that are published online. We have created a wrapper for this site which can translate its detailed publication pages into SHOE claims. We then used this wrapper to create SHOE claims for many publications from each of the Computer Science departments listed above. The page containing the SHOE claims about the names, authors, and categories of the selected publications can be found here.

Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy Domain

TSEs are brain diseases that cause sponge-like abnormalities in brain cells. "Mad Cow Disease", technically known as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), is a TSE that affects the central nervous system of cattle. Other TSE, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), affect humans.

This domain is the first real-world, large-scale effort to annotate pages with SHOE. The project is sponsored by the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN), a partnership between the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the University of Maryland.

More information on this project and a list of annotated pages is available from The Food Safety and Risk Assessment Clearinghouse Site.

Beer Domain

This domain is meant to describe beer, brewers, and related events. Currently, we have one page that describes a few microbreweries and their products.
