1948
	First course on using computers for calculations and numerical calculus created.

1955
	First digital programming course is offered, Math 156, ¿Programming for High Speed Computers.¿
1957
	Robert G. Glasser joined the faculty as a lecturer for the Physics Department.
	First analog computer course is offered, EE 130, ¿Electronic Analog Computers.¿
	Professor John Toll, Chair, Physics Dept. is appointed to Chair a committee on the need for a Data Processing or a Computer Center.
1958
	First digital computer organization course is offered, EE 131, "Electronic Digital Computers."
	Prof. John Toll urges that a ¿New Program¿ be requested in the asking budget.
1959
	President Elkins requests funds to establish a Data Processing Center.

1961
	Dr. Werner C. Rheinboldt accepts the position of Director of the Computer Center.

1962
	John P. Menard joined the faculty as the Assistant Director Computer Science Center.
	Charles J. Mesztenyi joined the faculty as a Senior Research Programmer.
	Abraham Sinkov joined the faculty as an Associate Professor of Mathematics.
	Earl J. Schweppe joined the faculty as a Lecturer.
	James D. Chappell joined the faculty as an Instructor.
	Werner C. Rheinboldt joined the faculty as a Research Assoc. Professor and Director.
	Computer Center established as an all university facility.
	Prof. Werner Rheinboldt hired as the first director of the Computer Science center.
	Construction of the Computer Center building commences.
1963
	Richard H. Austing joined the faculty Research Assistant Professor.
	George E. Lindamood joined the faculty as a Research Programmer.
	Azriel Rosenfeld joined the faculty as a Research Associate Professor.
	Initial Computer Science Center building completed.
	Rheinboldt negotiates a special grant with IBM Corporation for $300,000 to permit purchase of an IBM-7090.
	NASA awards $2.62 million to the Computer Science Center.
	Computer Science Center moves into its new and permanent building.
1964
	James M. Ortega joined the faculty as a Research Assistant Professor.
	Chan-Mo Park joined the faculty as a Research Programmer.
	Edmund M. Glaser joined the faculty as a Research Associate Professor; joint with Physiology.
	John L. Pfaltz joined the faculty as a Senior Research Programmer.

	NSF grant of June 1964 permits initiation of the Health Sciences Computer Center (HSCC), Baltimore campus, a branch of the CSC at College Park.
1965
	James S. Vandergraft joined the faculty as a Research Associate.
	David Lorge Parnas joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor.
	Abraham Tal joined the faculty as a visiting Research Assistant Professor.
	Computer Science Center Building completed, doubling the floor space.
	Prof. Rheinboldt resigns as CSC Director effective Sept. 1966. John Menard appointed Acting Director of CSC.
	Computer Science Center begins to offer courses in computer science.
1966
	James C. Owings joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor; joint with Mathematics.
	William F. Atchison joined the faculty as a Professor and the Director of the Computer Science Center.
	Yaohan Chu joined the faculty as a Professor; joint with Electrical Engineering.
	Prof. William F. Atchison hired as Director of Computer Science Center to replace Prof. Werner Rheinboldt who returned full time to teaching and research.
1967
	Harold P. Edmundson joined the faculty as a Professor; joint with Mathematics.
	Laurence Halperin joined the faculty as a Professor; joint with Library Sciences.
	Jack Minker joined the faculty as a Associate Professor.
	Victor B. Schneider joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor.
	Computer Science Center building consisting of 4 floors is completed.
	Dr. Jack Minker starts research group in Question-Answering Systems, Databases, and Information Retrieval.
	Master of Science Program in computer sciences commences as part of the CSC.
1968
	Computer Science Corporation awarded a contract to study Automatic Data Processing in the State of Maryland and the University of Maryland.
1969
	Edward S. Deutsch joined the faculty as a visiting Assistant Professor.
	Eliott D. Feldman joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor.
	Patrick E. Hagerty joined the faculty as a Assistant Professor & Assistant Director for Systems.
	Michael Hanani joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor.
	Robert G. Voigt joined the faculty as a visiting Asst Professor.
	CSC initiates a Ph.D. program in Computer Science.

1970
	Victor R. Basili joined the faculty as an Asst Professor.
	Laveen Kanal joined the faculty as a Professor.
	W. Michael Lay joined the faculty as an Instructor.

	Martin Milgram joined the faculty as a Lecturer.

	Ashok Agrawala joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor.
	Ronald M. Baecker joined the faculty as a Visiting Assistant Professor.

	Marvin V. Zelkowitz joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor.

1972
	George J. Fix joined the faculty as an Associate Professor; joint with Institute for Fluid Dynamics and Applied Mathematics.
	David L. Mills joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor.
	¿Report to the College Park Campus Senate from Organization Committee¿ submitted; recommending the separation of academic functions from the Computer Science Center to form a Department of Computer Science.
1973
	Matthew Hecht joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor.
	Department of Computer Science is formed and is part of the Mathematical and Physical Science and Engineering (MPSE) Division.
	Prof. Joseph Marchello is appointed Acting Provost of the MPSE Division and shortly thereafter as Provost.
	Board of Regents Approves establishment of a Department of Computer Science.
	Computer Science Department commences at Maryland. Education program of the CSC is transferred to the newly established CSD within the MPSE Division.
	John Menard appointed Director of the Computer Science Center.
	Prof. William F. Atchison appointed Acting Chairman, Computer Science Department.
1974
