Error Abstraction
This session applies the idea of error abstraction to the faults which
were found from ad hoc review. We estimated it to
take about 2-3 hours, and our subjects spent an average of 2.8 hours.
Description and Training
- We provided an overview of the session to our subjects. Again,
there are many details specific to our environment that will need to
be changed if this document is reused.
- We also gave a lecture in which we taught guidelines for error
abstraction to our subjects. The examples in this lecture came from
the requirements document for a video store. Based on their comments,
many subjects found this training to be lacking. I can think of two
possible ways to fix this lack: to provide additional examples, or to
give a copy of the video store document to the subjects beforehand and
give them the opportunity to work with it and get a better
understanding of the faults involved before they are used in the
example.
Handouts
- We provided a summary handout to remind subjects of the error
abstraction process.
Experimental Artifacts
Subjects used the same requirements document that was assigned in
session 1A.
Data Collection and Questionnaires
- Form 1.2 was provided as a template for submitting the fault list
and a questionnaire.
